Global Citizen Live generates $1.1 billion to fight poverty

Global Citizen Live, a 24-hour concert that featured performances from Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Lopez, BTS and Elton John and dozens of other stars, raised more than $1.1 billion in commitments and pledges over the weekend to fight extreme poverty.

Broadcasting from sites on six continents, including New York’s Central Park and in world.Vaccine pledges, which also came from the governments of Croatia and Ireland, followed numerous pleas, including from Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, onstage at Central Park on Saturday afternoon.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said the government has created an atmosphere of jointness to ensure modernisation of the armed forces in the rapidly evolving global security scenario. In his address at Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) annual meeting, he added public-private partnership can bring a “Defence Production Revolution” and help achieve the vision of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India)”.He underlined the importance of indigenisation and spoke about the reforms undertaken to integrate the private sector and achieve Atmanirbhar Bharat. “The reforms include earmarking 64.09% of Capital Acquisition Budget for 2021-22 for domestic capital procurement and 15% of capital procurement budget for direct procurement from private industry; setting up of Defence Industrial Corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu; introduction of Innovation for Defence Excellence; free Transfer of Technology through Defence Research & Development Organisation and increase in FDI in defence up to 74% through automatic route and up to 100% through government route.”

Marina Beach to soon get shaded walkways

Soon, walk along Marina Beach under the shade of creepers. The 2.5km-long walkway between the pedestrian footpath and the service lane is set to get a revamp.“Work has begun and two fountains have been set up. We plan to complete the project in a month,” said a senior Greater Chennai Corporation official. The Rs 23.5 lakh project involves six sun shades with creepers and five fountains. One fountain has been installed behind the Gandhi statue. The revamp, undertaken by road contractors, isn’t just for aesthetics, an official said as these installations will help boost the area’s micro climate, especially for walkers.
