Goodbye Ordnance Factory Board: A 220-year-journey ends

India

OFB controls 41 factories and employs more than 70,000 people. Its annual turnover is approximately 19,000 crore rupees. All of these will be divided into seven defense public sector units (DPSU), wholly owned by the government.

The seven successor DPSUs are:
Indian munitions
Armored car Nigam
India’s advanced weapons and equipment
Force comfort
Yantra India
Optel, India
Indian glider
All seven DPSUs will operate as corporate entities, with 100% ownership by the government. Since 2000, four committees have been established to recommend reforms in the defense sector. Except for the one established by the former Minister of Defense Manohar Parrikar, all three—the TKS Nair Committee (2000), the Vijay Kelkar Committee (2005), and the Lieutenant General Raman Puri Committee (2015)—all support OFB corporatization.
Replacing OFB with corporate entities puts these DPSUs under the jurisdiction of the Company Act. The government hopes that this change will bring cost competitiveness to India’s defense production sector
